Anthem

Thu Jan 22, 2009, 12:08 PM
So I just finished reading Ayn Rand's novel Anthem. I don't even know where to begin in describing how important I find this novel to be. Everyone should read it at some point in their life, in my opinion. My reading of this book came at a perfect time in my life. I've been thinking, more so then usual, about the world and it's corruption of purpose. Also, I have been wandering through the ideas that I have had for a while about what I will be in the future. For a while now I have known that I would love to be an English professor, of what part of English I had not givin much thought. Recently through the viewing and reading of the play History Boys and through several discussions I have had with some da users, I have really thought about the idea of 'knowledge for the sake of knowledge.' This idea applying to how I live, how I would like to teach, and in general to the outlook upon learning that has been lost, or maybe never has even really existed. Within Anthem, the main character Equality 7-2521 states:

"We wish nothing, save to be alone and to learn, and to feel
as if with each day our sight were growing sharper than a
hawk's and clearer than rock crystal."

This feeling, this all encompassing passion for expanding one's self through the knowledge this world contains is what is gradually returning to me. It is giving me some reason for actually looking at the world around me, instead of just muddling through the day wishing for the weekend and sleep. Now all that is left at the moment for me to wish for is to fully realize what I want from life, which I'm not sure is possible, and for someone to appear in my life who shares my ideas and is not at least 20 years older than me. lol. Personally, this whole journal entry feels very selfish, the amount of times I have written the word I and some verson of it is sickening. Though, If you've read Anthem, you'll probably understand the frequent use of the word....

Ah well, If anyone has read this, I hope it has not been too boring. Also, make sure to check out Anthem by Ayn Rand. She's a terrific writer with a powerful voice.
